Default Webiste links not right

Hi I think I have been making a bad mistake with the website that I am building for a local charity.

I have been putting as an example only www.mortormow.com and www.mortormow.com/index.html thinking they are one in the same thing but apparently they are not.

Which is the better kind of link to go back to the home page? or to use when people click on Home in the menu?

Hope I am allowed to use my web address, I needed to show the difference. They both go to the same place but if you use both in a website it causes problems for the bots. Is this the case?

OK I can now answer my own question. Canonical or duplicate web pages for indexing in Google I need to change the .htaccess file so that only my www pages will be indexed instead of my domain pages.

There is a big difference between the both of them.

Hi Bounties,

I thinks you have to Redirect its via 301 Redirect in .htaccess file
so when people or Search Engine Crawler comes to your sites and when go to this page
http://www.mortormow.com/index.html
it's could be redirect to http://www.mortormow.com/ so it's not created problem for you and it's proper way to the sites when we are going to opened it's.

For anybody who is interested I found the answer in another forum that I won't mention here.

You need to edit the .htaccess file like Jectillplum suggested. If you do a search for 301 redirects and examples of editing .htaccess you will find what is needed to do your own website.

This is real important if you want better ranking. It stops the search engines from indexing your non-www pages and index your www pages only. This stops a duplication problem and you get better ranking.

If you have a Wordpress site you would want Google to do the opposite and promote your non-www instead.

It gave me a headache working all of this out, but I am glad I did.

Hey guys been busy elsewhere, and just saw these postings. To Bounties, my apologizes. I was trying to help, and did not intend to send anyone to a broken link, which looks like what I did.

My intent was to put the url of my About page as an example. I screwed up. I have removed the offending link.

Please accept my apologizes.

Sgt. Mac

hello,

i can advise you to use the first link. when you click the second link that you provided it redirects to the first link so better use the first link.

Here is big tip that many people also over look.

Use Google webmaster tools to tell them which is the preferred link you want. Otherwise, your incoming links will be divided between multiple names giving you less authority.

Even if you don't think you need it, it won't hurt to just make sure because you can not always control how someone is linking to your site.

Since this is the first I've heard of this, I'm probably one of the 'many people' overlooking it. Can you explain this in another way, I'm not grasping what you mean by the above? Where can I find the Google Webmaster Tool?

In Google do a search for "Webmasters Tools" You will find Google Webmasters Tools and Yahoo Webmasters Tools, and Bing Webmasters Tools. You need to register www.yourdomain.com and yourdomain.com in all 3 of these. You will need to create a e-mail account with each of them to get access to each one of their Webmasters Tools.

You will need to submit your www and non-www web address to all 3. But in Google you can also specify your geographical location. (recommended) You will be expected to put either a file or meta tag in the header of your domain, so that your website will be verified by Google, Yahoo and Bing. That is 3 different meta tags to install.

Also while we are on website optimization put this meta tag in your header as well.
<link rel="canonical" href="http://www.yourdomain.com/"/> Just change your domain.co to what ever is appropriate.

Last but not least, Do a search for edit .htaccess so that only the www address or non-www address is the only accessible address.

Most www edit the .htaccess so that the non-www will not list but if you have a blog site you would go with the non-www. At least that is how I understand it all.

Hope this helps. Big topic for one forum posting.
