I think by having your solar flair so bright it actually makes the ( Y ) look very jagged and grainy. Maybe tone down the opacity a bit on the flair. If that doesn't work then you could always just put a opaque layer over the top of the flair but under the text. I dont know if you did or not but another trick I have learned to cure this is to rasterize the text layer then adjust the opacity in that.

Thanks for the advice. Right now the banner is the least of my worries (my real job being the greatest at the moment). My list is about 21 items long, and the banner's at the top, but is by no means the most important one. I'll get to it in due time, though.

Default 7 Paragraphs

Honestly, I've never heard of the 7 paragraph rule. My index's length will be decided by the length of my posts. Hell when I was testing things to make sure that it looked right at all lengths, that lorem ipsum text was 20 paragraphs long!

Right now I'm in the process of redesigning the CSS. I hope to shorten it significantly, as well as make it more standard between the different browsers.

EDIT - I spent much of last night and all of this morning rewriting the CSS. I still haven't tested the site with IE8, but it now looks the same in all six of the browsers I have (which I've probably listed somewhere in this thread). I also changed a couple of the images. Also, I have not finished the new CSS, so there are more unformatted things on the site now than when I first started.

And no, I did not darken the banner yet.

EDIT 2 - I uploaded some new code (at least I think I did) that let's IE8 see the site correctly. At least on the front page. I did more work on some other parts. And now I have an 18-item list (still growing) of projects I need to complete in order to complete the site's design.
Just to clarify the old 7 paragraph rule...what they meant was that it was best, that a visitor not have to scroll down the page more than one time to view a page. ie; Click the mouse and scroll down one time, without having to click and scroll again...It's kind of like page load times...If you can lesson the time it takes for a visitor to see your page, or scroll to view, it's all in your favor.

Oh okay. You're talking about having the majority of the content above the fold. Yeah, I try to keep it like that.

Alright good folks, double post for emphasis. I have uploaded the new version of the site. There are several fixes in this version. First and foremost, I have welded some of the various images together in order to cut down on the formatting. It helped me make the site look the same in all browsers. However, I have still not yet tested it with IE8, so there may still be some broken parts.

I have not replaced any of the old template images, so whatever imperfections were there still are. Before the site goes live (for real), I will redo every image. So basically... no complaining about the banner.

I've formatted a little more of the site than what was already done. I changed the link colors from green and red to green and ghost white (the color of the other text), because the former seemed too Christmasy for a science fiction literature website.

Lastly, I've also included a favicon. I don't like it, but it only took a minute to make, so whatever. I'll change it later.

Link in case you forgot: http://www.foxneeson.exofire.net. Have at it.

EDIT - I am shocked and awed. IE8 seems to have virtually no trouble with the site. I just had to add one declaration (one major one. I didn't do an in-depth analysis). So now I just hope that the steamed IE8 application I use renders the same as the real IE8.

Awesome. I've tested it with 7 different browsers, and it all looks the same. So I'm moving onto other fun problems like where to put the previous/next posts buttons... My template's pretty tight space-wise.
