a couple of thoughts
Your site looks good. There are a number of things I would look at though. All of these are rather minor; I didn't see any major problems right off. Mostly I am seeing minor appearance issues.
First, while partially transparent text has its place, it doesn't really make sense in the header area. As they are they draw attention in an unnatural way. I don't think you mean to suggest that this content is relatively unimportant. Or that those words might be links. I can't really determine a purpose that fits with faded text.
Then the two images in the right side box calling attention to the subscription area above are a little too dominant. I am not sure what I would do. They might look better if the images were a little smaller. Certainly there needs to be a little more space between the one on the left and the text above it.
The top part of your page might be a little better if this box were shortened a bit anyway. In fact I think it might help if the entire top part of the page were compressed a little so that it doesn't eat up all the area above the fold but you do not want to change your look much. It looks good.
There are a number of paragraphs throughout your site that are not divided correctly. That is there is no space between them. These are quite noticeable but easy to fix.
A small design issue, but one I like to avoid because I personally find it a distraction is where there is an image and the paragraph extends under it but with only one line. You have two of these on the current first page. This can be avoided by resizing the image or adding a little additional text (or removing some).
I like your work. The background is an especially nice touch because its personalized content separates it from copy cat sites. And I certainly agree 100% with your website and forum recommendations in the second article!
