Default Menu Design

Hey guys. If you go on over to my site (see signature), you'll see that, with two sub menus, my site has a lot of links. I get the feeling that the sub menus might confuse some people, or possibly annoy others. But, I like where my menu is. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to either layout a good menu is a small space, or possibly accentuate the sub menus? I was thinking of the latter, and have some ideas, but I think it's better to get advice from people who would visit the site and really use the menu.

I would definitely change the colour of the submenus, to make them stand out a bit more. You may even want to change the font size as well.

Usually in a menu system, the navigation is moved to a sidebar with the submenus shown below the main menu, but since you like where the menu is, you could just use what you have.

There aren't too many links to confuse the visitors, but if you continue to add more, you may run out of space.

Default One simple fix.

Sean,

You are right in thinking that people might be unpleasantly surprised by the operation of your menu. But it is not hard to fix.

Instead of having a new line of menus appear following a click (when people click on a link they expect to get to the page they are looking for not another list of links), just use a drop down menu so that when someone hovers over the links those that require additional choices will have those in the drop down menu and they will click on that.

If you will permit the suggestion, instead of describing your site as "Possibly the world's most pointless website..." why not say "Possibly the world's most important website, because it's about me." Actually you could come up with something better, but what I am suggesting is that you get what you expect from yourself and others. It is always better to plant expectations of something positive than something negative.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I do like what my site's subtitle says. The idea is for it to be a personal site. Any fan base that arises out of the content is completely accidental.

I think the reason I set the menu up the way it is now is because I don't like hover menus. I have how one small movement out of the sub menu area will make it disappear. That's why I made it so you had to click to show and hide. But I think I will change the format so that the formatting of the sub menu header changes when it is open.

This might not be what the thread is about, but I think you have a nice website, Kakashi266. Keep working on it!

Thanks, I always like compliments on my site.

Anyway, I think I have it in a good fashion, now. When you hover over the sub menu header links, a little message pops up telling you that a sub menu will appear when you click, and disappear when you click again. That lets people know what they are getting into, I hope.

Unhappy Yup

Your welcome Kakashi266. I don't want to tell you this, but your menu doesn't do anything different... I hope you can get that fixed!!! Good Luck.

Well, for the first question, tell me what browser and operating system you are using. My menu does not look different at first. The changes are what happens when you mouse over two of the links, and when you click them. Those two links are "Sean's Stuff," and "Angry TV Robot." Try it again, and get back to me. I have tested my website with Firefox, IE 7, Opera, and Safari, and they all work exactly as they should.

And for the second question, that tv is the one my roommate used to have in the dorm room. I took the picture with a high resolution (8 mp) camera, and painstakingly edited the photo in Photoshop to extract the television (I'm no expert, so it might have taken me much longer than it should have). The "face" on the television is exactly what was actually on it, so I didn't have to shop anything into it, other than those sinister looking eyebrows. That's all there is to it.

Default It works

Kakashi266

Your change works in both Firefox and IE. It could be that Archulas didn't point at the right links—you only have the mouseover effect on the two.

Your site looks good, and you did do a good job on the TV.
