Good idea to learn the basics of html and css. Even if you use good templates you will always run into problems like the ones here. You need to be able to make adjustments.
Here is some good advice that I wish I had known much earlier. There are a lot of tutors out there, some free, a lot that sound really good. Watch out! When I first started I spent a lot of time studying what I had to unlearn later. Painful. Most of these sites use a lot of html that has been deprecated (set aside as no longer proper and destined to become unsupported at some time). Most of these use older html mark up for style--like setting the background color as you are discussing here. You will note how your template uses CSS. That is the right way.
Two of the best sites that you can depend on for meeting current standards are:
http://www.w3schools.com/ and
http://www.htmldog.com/ . Both of them have great, free, online tutors and good information about marking up web pages.
Good success.
