I agree with Lisa, but let me elaborate... In my opinion, the keys that lead to SBI sites success are:
a) SBI emphasizes research and focus on a few "profitable" keywords. By profitable, it means that there is a decent demand for it, but low competition (low number of quality webpages optimized for the same keyword). Having this figured out from the beginning puts you ahead, because you are focusing on words that will likely get indexed and ranked highly easier than high competition keywords. You can certainly do this on your own, but SBI makes it easier.
b) the second area that SBI helps is that after you enter the content of one of your pages, you can click "submit it!" in the SBI page builder (which publishes your page on your webiste) OR you can click "analyze it!" which analyzes the level of optimization of your page to the keywords you're trying to focus on for that page.
Of course, there are a lot of other things SBI does, such as search engine submission (i think), and others, that could help your site get listed faster... I may be missing a few other important ones, but the most critical in my opinion are points (a) and (b) mentioned above.
Like Lisa mentioned, however, there is no guarantee... you will find some unsuccessful SBI sites, but this could be due to the lack of effort put into it, or the site owner did not interpret or follow the SBI guides correctly.
I think SBI is an extremely valuable tool, especially for beginners, but SBI does not have a secret/magical formula, you can do it on your own if you know what you're doing, plan, and research thoroughly.
