Welcome Liz!

You can actually transfer your domain to SBI! and continue to use it if you decide to keep it. However after using the brainstorming tools you may decide to choose another (more profitable) name then you could just forward your existing domain to SBI! as Webdev suggested.

Hmmmm....okay. I think I understand that. (and thanks for such a detailed response to my question.)

So, here's another question on the same topic:

thebodywisdomcenter.com is due to expires in May. I am considering simply not renewing and immediately creating it with SBI. HOWEVER...I have a ton of email and folders with years worth of info and many many people have my email address of info@thebodywisdomcenter.com. I don't want to screw that up. How can I keep that email address with SBI?

Can you offer some more of that wonderful insight into this problem for me? Thanks so much!

Liz

Hey Liz,

As long as you own the domain and transfer it over to SBI! then you can still create that same e-mail address again. No problem. Right now that e-mail is tied to your existing host. So once you're done with them that account will be deleted. So you would just re-create it under your SBI! account.

I would do all this (transferring) before it expires though (just in case someone else is waiting on that name to expire and snaps it up).

Can someone confirm that's right. SBI! would operate as the host in this sense so theoretically this is just like swapping hosts.

Hi Liz-
Here's another thing to consider - you can have multiple domains with SBI.

One of the (very cool) SBI tools is NameParkIt! (NPI!). With that tool you can purchase a domain name (very inexpensively) and point it wherever you want it to go (such as a specific page on your site, or to an affiliate link).

With that in mind, you may want to check with support at SiteSell when you purchase to see if your old (current) domain name can be pointed to your new domain, as an NPI!, after you do your niche research.

Additionally, make sure your past work isn't lost! Make sure your existing pages and files are backed up - no need to completely reinvent the wheel, right? You'll only need to make sure that only one site is "live" - you don't want to get dinged for duplicate content (having two sites with the same content at each).

Keep up the great work!

Whoa Whoa Whoa Amy....let's back up a minute.

First....OMG using NPI is such a great idea! I'm familiar with it because I have literally JUST started to built my aromatherapy website this week and have parked other versions of my site name. But using it to park my current massage name is smart.

However, Amy, can you please clarify what you said here...
"You need to be sure that only one site is "live" - you don't want to get dinged for duplicate content (having two sites with the same content at each)."

dinged? Not sure what that means but it sounds like a slap on the wrist from SBI. Can you kindly elaborate? Oh Amy, you know so much! I feel like there is SO SO much information and although the SBI website is a complete course for only $300, I just can't seem to read everything.

Thanks for letting me pick your brain!

Hi Liz-
Great - I'm glad you know about NPI- It's a really good way to have a placeholder for ideas, control pointers to your site(s), have domains for special projects.

I also use the Tracker Library a lot for "masked" affiliate links - but that's a different thread (in fact, I may do a quick tut, if I can manage to spend enough time to make it short!!!)

Ok- supplemental pages and getting "dinged" (that's a highly technical term... )

SBI only works WITH you. The system doesn't punish or pull you down in anyway. All the tools/system/helps/forum (do I make my point?) work to build you up.

Google, while a great and fertile "land of opportunity" is the one that does the "dinging".

Supplemental pages are pages in which there is content that is duplicated on other indexed pages somewhere on the internet.

If you submit an article for distribution and others post it to their sites, you may end up in the supplemental file.

This brings your perceived valued down - and impacts how Google ranks and rates your site.

Lisa actually knows a bunch more about this than I do - maybe she could chime in here (to keep the "ding" metaphor in play? )

The main focus remains: write valuable content for your readers. Don't chase rankings or ratings or supplemental information in the early, building phase.

When you get to the part where you're building a link-program (inpointing links to your site) just remember that the articles you post should also be high quality and unique - as if you're creating a page for your site.

I'll be checking your progress, Liz. Our niches are similar and it's fun to watch and help folks (without fear, mind you. We're in a multi-billion dollar market/industry/niche - there's plenty of room for us!)

As Amy said, Google has a duplicate content filter. So if your first site is already in Google's index and you move that content over to your new SBI! site then the most recent could get ignored because of the "Duplicate Content Penalty."

So just make sure you only have one version of your content out there at one time. Of course if copycatters steal your content, there's no way to avoid that, but Google is usually pretty good about being able to tell which sites are the authentic ones.
