Question Customizing Site Elements

Im trying to add a background image, through site-elements, but in the action guide, they mention, you need to edit your image with some kind of graphic software, before you upload it.

Is this true and which free orl graphic trial program, should I use for this rather basic task?

What do you need to do to your image? If it's a basic resize and nothing major you can try http://www.gimp.org/

I want to change my white background, into an entirely different (light) color.

Oh OK. Haven't used the block builder in a while since I upload my own HTML, but is there a way for you to just provide a hex color code since you really don't need an image for a solid color.

When you click on preview (see background image) they show you a tiny white squared image.
I guess you have to produce something like that, but in a different color and upload it. I have never done it, but I am thinking about changing my background color as well.
