software?
Hi, I shall be purchasing SBI next week, but someone advised me to acquire the software first? I am not sure what software I need, as I shall have many pages on the website, and my contents to place in my website is nearly completed. I do have many photos that will be shown in thumbnail and double click to enlarge to the original size which I have still yet to learn, so is it possible that you could link me to some software sites free or otherwise that I will need? Thank you.

No extra software
I purchased SBI a few weeks ago for my new site and there is NO extra software that you will need to purchase. SBI has everything you need to build your website.
However, you will need to upload your own graphics into SBI's graphic's library and if you want to upload your own HTML, you will have the ability to do that as well.
I would suggest when you get SBI and you get your login information, the first thing you want to do is start the video action guide right away. This guide is in parts, some parts are 30 minutes, others a little longer and/or shorter. Make sure you go through them (at your own pace) and usually all of your questions will be answered.
Also, I would definitely suggest you reading the SBI Tips & Techniques section as well. There you will find additional information on fine-tuning your website. I refer to this section on a daily basis.
Good luck and welcome to another soon-to-be SBI owner. I'm still adding content to my site, but I love SBI and I'm glad that I was able to get it. It's definitely a business investment and one that can work well for you provided you're willing to work - that is, what you put in it, will work in your favor.
I'm sure Lisa (WB Administrator) and others will be adding their thoughts as well. Good luck!

Hi podlod,
Renee is right. No software needed. Now as far as making the pictures larger when people click on them, there are a few options here but you don't need software. You can do this with things like javascript or you can just do it with basic HTML. If you do some google searches on this I'm sure you'll find different solutions. Maybe someone who has added thumbnails to their site can suggest something. HTML is really the long way of doing it and can be tedious if you have a lot of images.

Unless I am not understanding the question correctly and you are looking for something different, I am quite sure I read how you can do this with the SBI block builder.
I am trying to figure out how to make images thumbnail size myself (open to suggestions!), but once I get that down I will be doing this as well.
First you will upload both sizes to the graphic library, then when you use the thumbnail graphic there is an option in block builder to make the graphic a clickable link. You do this...and then link to the larger image in a graphic box on a second page. Once you are actually using the block builder you will know exactly what I mean.
Let me try to sum it up....you will put the large graphic on one page and the thumbnail on the other page (presumably with other thumbnails if that is what you are doing)...then the thumbnail will be a clickable graphic, which when the visitor clicks on it...it takes them to the page with the larger graphic which you can set to open in a new window.
I hope I didn't make it confusing...I feel like I am sort of talking around in circles!

I see, so there will be a link on my new website to be able to download any photos that I need, is this right?
I have approx 50 photos that come under about 8 categories, wildlife, still life, nature, etc; so you can now see why the reason I asked if I was limited on pages.

I don't think you are limited on your pages...but I am not sure. I know you can have at least 250-300 pages through them..but that doesn't sound like it will be enough for you. You would have to check directly with SBI to see if they limit the number of pages or images you can upload to their system.
Another option would be to upload all of your thumbnails to the sbi graphic library..then have another host where you upload all of your large photos, using it only for that....and doing what I mentioned before, instead of having the large graphic open on an sbi page, have it go to each page where you have uploaded the corresponding large-sized image.
Once again remember...I am still a newbie and these are just methods I have read about, not actually done, while looking to do the same thing...put up my images in thumbnail, allowing the visitor to click them into larger images if they prefer.

Hi Jewel, want to thank you for your replies and your help and advice, it will help enormously! The SBI Gallery is something I will have to get into when I purchase SBI at the weekend so I will no doubt be getting back to you to pick your brains.
Just one more thing you might be able to advise me with while I am writing is, do you happen to know any reasonably priced anti virus software I need to purchase for my website?

You know, that is a good question. I have not seen it addressed yet so I don't know if the virus protection SBI has for their sites is enough...or do I need to invest in a commercial virus protection package???

Remember, your site is hosted on SBI!'s server, not your computer so anti virus software does no good and it's not used for web servers anyway. SiteSell does daily backups of all your content so I wouldn't worry about it.

I found a better way!
Hi Podlod! This is what I told you you would need to do for the thumbnails linking to a larger image....

Well, I started doing this on my site...I resized a picture to thumbnail, then uploaded both sizes to the graphics library, then put the thumbnail on my page and set up the large graphic on its own page, and linked the thumbnail to the large graphic. Of course, as with doing anything else, the first time I did it it was a huge pain! But it worked! I did one as a test...and then was going to go ask some questions in the SBI forum about this...and then I found a post there that showed me a much easier way to do this...AND you don't have to create a separate page for each large graphic..although the large graphic will open in its own window when the visitor clicks on the thumbnail.
I think to explain how to do it now in the block builder is complicated when you aren't yet familiar with it...but when you are ready I will give you the exact instructions. You can post here...or if for some reason I miss your request, just go to my contact form and ask there.
Now, once again, since you have so many pictures to upload, you may want to find out what the limits are for uploading to the graphics library because you may end up having your pictures hosted at another site and linking to them there anyway. I am not sure about that.
I am SO excited about this!
And now, for anybody who might be listening, I was wondering if you would let me know what you think about the graphic sizes I chose...is the thumbnail too small, or is it good for a thumbnail? Is the larger graphic too big? Just right? I don't know what a good rule of thumb is for sizes. It is the picture on the page "How To Make A Charcoal Chimney." The one with the can and the can opener. I have a few more to add there in the same way and I just want to know if the sizes could have been better or they are okay before I put all the time and energy into adding them.
Thanks!

Hi Jewel, I am not at the stage to place any photos as of yet, maybe slightly later as I have to go to hospital for awhile.
I have seen your website and I might say it really is impressive, and I hope mine comes out looking as good as yours!!!

Picture size
Jewel,
There's no hard and fast rule for picture sizes. A lot depends on what is in the picture and how it fits into the context.
In the can picture you mention, there are some changes I would make. First, since it is the focus of the discussion (not just decorative, for example) I think it could be a little larger perhaps but not necessarily since it is a simple enough content to be easily understood. However, there is clearly too much space below it, especially in view of the small space above. Also, if you want a picture that size I would not leave so much space on the two sides. I would float the picture to one side and have text beside it.

Thanks for the compliment Podlod! Take care of yourself and whenever you are ready just ask.
