Original post by West:
I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I simply cannot figure this out. I downloaded the free template from the 2create blog and read the instructions a few times. I then downloaded Kompozer and opened the index file in Kompozer. But I cannot open the style.css sheet. I keep getting an error that says "this is not an HTML file". So I'm guessing that Kompozer can only open HTML files?? If so, how am I supposed to make changes to the template? I can only open it in Frontpage. Am I missing something? I played around with the Cascade button on the Kompozer toolbar and figured out how to change colors, width, etc, but the changes never stick. It keeps going back to the original template.
I then tried the transition template from SBI! but I can't figure out how to add a third column to it. I looked on the SBI forums for help but couldn't find anything. I've been going at this for about 1 week now and I am about to lose my mind.
Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Hey West I had the same problem with Nvu. It gave me the same message about the CSS file not being an HTML file and it wouldn't open it. What I did was I opened the CSS in note pad and did my changes there. Then I saved them and then opened up the 'index file' in a browser to see the changes I'd made. It worked okay, the changes I made to the CSS file in note pad changed the index file as long as I saved the CSS file.
I think someone as already suggested it and I will also, save the original copy, although you can always download Lisa's template's again if you mess them up. Just delete the messed up ones and start over.
I however didn't really care for Nvu and since I've used Dreamweaver in the past, and was able to get a copy of the new version, I went back to it. I had no problems opening the CSS file in Dreamweaver and did not get that message about it not being an HTML file. I know you said you don't want to pluck down the money for Dreamweaver, but I just have one word for you.... 'torrent'

West, I completely missed your post. Sorry about that. You posted that when I was on VC and when I was out of town I must admit, some posts slipped by and I guess yours was one of them.
Have to agree with JaMina, Dreamweaver is definitely worth it. I wouldn't fool with FrontPage and don't know anything about Kompozer. FrontPage has a tendency to add extra characters and screw with your code. Another good reason to use Dreamweaver (if you're going to use my template) is I created it with Dreamweaver so it's going to look the best in that software.

I did as suggested and opened the file in Notepad. When I make changes there and save it, everything works fine. So thanks everyone for clearing that up.
I've been playing around with the colors a lot, and have decided to go with a completely different color scheme. So now I need a new top image.
What's the best way to create one from scratch? Or are there any webesites that offer cheap ones?

Oh good. I don't know any good cheap or free logo creators. Of course there are those on-the-fly logo creators but the tend to look cheesy and low quality. Maybe someone else knows? You may want to post a question about this in the Images forum to see if someone knows where you can go. These people are very resourceful.

Hi Guys
First post here...I don't use DW or any other program to make my web sites (all SBI), I use a variant of Notepad, called Notepad2. It is a huge improvement on the original notepad but allows you to easily see all your (S)HTML and CSS files in a really easy to read format. HTML & CSS are both pretty easy to learn so why waste time with yet another program?
I've tried using various programs to build both HTML but they always seem to add in all sorts of unnecessary rubbish. Notepad2 is the biz!
All the best
