Subscribe to the Google Webmaster Channel on YouTube. Some really helpful info there. In fact, there are probably a few videos that address this very issue.

Question NOTHING CAN HAVE NEGATIVE IMPACT

Non-relative links will never have negative impact on your website since anybody could make 1000 non-relative links to your website. If it worked like that people would use it to take down competition with linking to competitors website with words like "HARDCORE PORN".

If you watched all videos from google and read everything in webmaster tools you should have already came to this conclusion. Google does not penalize for something that is not in your own source code. And how could they? The only thing Google can do in this situation is to ignore the back link or give it less weight.
I'm such a newbie.... but from what I understand about google, I would think using irrelevant links would be like plugging your battery charger into a wall socket with no electricity available.

Relevant links are always a plus to have. These days Google can tell where your getting links from. The more relevant the links the better your page rank will be. However, you can place links anywhere and it will be helpful.

This is good to know. I always wondered what would happen once we start getting links from places that are not as relevant. For instance, my site is about diving, but I also tend to post on travel sites and have gotten quite a few back links from travel sites. But I guess they can only help.

Good to see that theory confirmed here.

I think the relevancy of your back-links is important for coming up in search relevant to your site, along with getting to your audience/targeted niche better. That's just my opinion though.

It's better to have links from relevant sites, (Which I'm sure would help more) But I don't think it will hurt anything to have a link/links on non relevant sites pointing to yours.

    Hi,

Relevant link is most important for crawling the website. Because google has database and all data stored in category wise. So if our link relevant, we can get crawling fast to our website.

My preference is to find content that is very close to that of my page as I do not want to get the visitor ticked off when he clicks on my page from the site where I found the backlink.
I have a lot of pages so I have to be careful re backlinking but I feel it to be worth the effort.

The more I read about how Google is evaluating, the more determined I am to get proper linking for my pages. I think the search engines are gaining more and more power over our sites and our income from them. I foresee that the search engines will evaluate relevancy as a matter of course in future.

Getting backlinks to make numbers may not be as worthwhile as hunting for the right content to link to.

On one of the SBI! help pages, it is mentioned to get a couple links for each page, I have no way , at this level of experience, of knowing if a couple is enough.

I disagree with that - remember google bombing? Also why would google release a link disavow tool to remove backlinks you think are bad?
