Backing up on external disk

I was wondering: is it possible to make a back-up of my entire WP site on an external hard drive?
And if so: how?

Edit: I mean directly, without going through filezilla or simething like that

The only way I've found to make a backup of an entire WP website that hosted on a remote server is to first backup the database, put it in the wordpress folder, and then download the whole folder to a local PC using FTP. I have mine scheduled to backup every night and download every morning automatically. If you search google with the phrase 'wordpress backup godaddy', you'll find my procedure. I'd to post a link to it, but I don't have permission to post links yet.
