For me, at this stage, a forum is for learning from others and asking questions and perhaps contributing a little to a discussion as I gain some knowledge. The backlinking is not my priority at this time, especially as it takes time to make decent posts and there are other means of creating backlinks that are more time efficient. I find that these forums often have some excellent advice that we can use, they act as a library that we can refer to as needed.
