Last month was my best month because I focused on it. I think that the more attention you pay to something, the more it changes and that can work both ways. The real way to tweak adsense performance is to put the ads so people will see them (it's a bit greasy, but it works) and make them blend in with the same colors as your text (greasier still). Ads on the sidebars will produce about 10% of the results of those that are positioned in hotspots.

Lee, but what about repeat visitors? You say "it's a bit greasy" and I get what you mean lol. But if your visitors can't trust your clicks, I wonder if you will see them again? Something tells me, maybe just me, you don't retire off of selling something to someone once for 10 bucks, but selling them selling for one buck many many times year after year over the course of their lifetimes.... But I admit that's just a gut feeling about biz in general and might not apply here....

Earnings have been rather pitiful for my sites from Christmas to New Year. I think most people were away, and so the numbers were in the doldrums. It only roared back to life today.

Hi Tim, I think your sites must attract a lot of people who are sad and at their day jobs and are looking to be happy and jobless and traveling the world :-).

Hi Randal, My site has a real problem with getting repeat visitors. Some of it was based on FAQs for particular products and I had no intention of monetizing the site when I wrote them, so they go on for pages to make the navigation easier. Those pages get a lot of repeat visitors, but they don't click on ads. My blog has an assortment of articles but the ones with traffic are 'how to' articles related to fixing a particular item and so the traffic there is nearly 100% search based. And once they fix that item, they are gone for good. But those are the articles whose adsense revenue has a reasonable CTR, especially if the person is in a buying mood.

But I have no control over what Google runs in the Adsense blocks. I just hope they are doing a good job at vetting the advertisers so my visitors don't end up getting ripped off by an ad and blaming me for it. I've actually had some commenters tell me, "I see you're recommending such-and-such product..." which I most certainly didn't mention at all in the posting and then I realize that it must have appeared in an Adsense text block (which matches the font and colors of the article) and they think that I'm endorsing those products. I have a disclaimer on my 'About' page to cover this, but since Google delivers the reader directly to the article, there's a good chance they never read it.
