Once you get your site off the ground you can move it to a pay site.

The bigger questions are:
Are people going to pay for a social network?
What would be the advantages?

That was a site I made to learn HTML and it turned into a video tutorial site which I try to update it at least once a week. Yes I can take the DBs if I move.
