Personally, I allow Google to index categories and tag pages. I think it's cool that a category or tag page can be found via a keyword...others disagree.
I think that if you use a Google site map it eliminates a lot of problems with duplicate content but don't quote me on that.

you can select what to NOFOLLOW. If you use all the features you'll get found quickly when people search...as long as you apply the basic SEO stuff
One of my blogs gets about 20 hits a day from search engine traffic...It's 1 month old and is routinely on the first page for long tail keywords. I post about 3-5 times a week. No, I don't write 3-5 articles a week. I use article directory content, news posts and a post of my own. From time to time I'll rewrite what i wish i'd thought of and have an opinion about.
It usually come out very different that what I started with.
Last thing go to Google webmaster tools and get verified it helps with them indexing pages.
