I hope I'm posting this question in the right place. I was doing a little research on my competitors for my site concept keyword - fitness walking. There is one site that comes up about 5th or 6th on page 1 of Google's results and I don't understand why.
It is one man's account of how he used fitness walking to lose weight. It's an interesting article he's written, but the whole site is only one page and he barely has any backlinks (less than 50).
This goes against everything I've been learning (content, content, content and backlinks). So how can this site be on Google's 1st page? The only thing I can think of is that it looks like he wrote it in 2003 (that's what the copywright says). Could that be it or is there something I'm not understanding?
It's hard to tell without seeing the site. I did a search for fitness walking but didn't see this article. The only results on my first page were from medical sites, about.com and thewalkingsite.com.
Did you check the age of the domain? Sometimes older sites that have been in the ranks for quite a while have an advantage.
I wouldn't put too much emphasis on Google's backlink count as they only represent a portion of the site's true backlink count. One of my competitors shows up on the first page with 20+ backlinks and has been there for years. I think a big part of that is the age of the domain. The site has been around forever.

Just try to find some good sites on Paint Shop Pro! Even if you stipulate X2 (the newest version) the great bulk of what you get, including first page links, are years out of date. Most tutorials are several versions behind and haven't been updated for years.
This does raise a few questions.

How did you figure out it has only about only 50 inlinks? If you used the link: query in Google, it would only show a random list of backlinks. I suggest you also use Yahoo Site Explorer as it gives a more accurate list of a sites backlinks.
