Default How to move up in rank

Hi, it's me again

I tried to google about my site's subject on google, trying to see what rank I have. But I can't find my site listed no matter what topics search!

The only time my site shows up is when I google its name, and still I'm in 10th place!

How can I ever gain traffic if no one can find me?

So my question is: how do I move up in rank?

Thanks
Gigababbler

PS: I didn't like the name and discription given for my site on google. How do I change it?

Hey Gig,

Umm, your site isn't even complete yet, patience Grasshopper. (that's from an old show I'm sure you wouldn't remember.)
The best thing to do right now is just keep filling in content and get it up and running. Add fresh content to it as often as you can (blog, etc) and keep at it! Never, ever give up!!! Persistence is absolutely key. Patience is right up there with it. Your doing well, just keep going...

Sorry, missed some...

You can change your keywords and descriptions with the use of meta tags which I noticed your site does not yet have. (This is also the first thing read by search engines so it will help with that too)

Read about how to do all that here:

13 steps to help you get listed and increasing your ranking in google:

Also do the meta tag suggestion, make sure you use th best keywords/phrases you think relate to your site. Perhaps look at your competitors sites and look at thier meta tags (view the page source or info, depending on browser)

Meta tags are something you should use for sure but they are not generally going to make the difference in whether you rank well or not anymore. As DotComBot said first you need time. But more importantly you need a ton of high quality inbound links.

Google wants to see that other quality (high traffic) sites are linking and recommending you. Of course that starts with good content but you also have to promote the heck out of your site in forums, digg, stumbleupon, blogs, and of course continuously writing great content.

It takes time...lots of time so hang in there!

I was in the same boat last year when I first started my blog. I now get over a hundred visitors a day from Google alone.

The more unique, quality content you write the better you will do with Google.

You definitely have to active in the online community as Lisa mentioned. This also takes time, but as Google visits those sites, and you leave your URL, then Google will also pick up that link as a backlink to your site.

Ok, thanks for the replies.

I do have a question for meta tags though...do I need to put it on every single page? Or only my home page? Cause it's such a hassle to open all my pages one by one and paste the code.

You bet you do. Every page talks about something different so you want to use the tags to describe what that page is about.

Guess I'll start working...

I have another question: for example, if I made a mistake on my menu and want to fix it, is there a way to make the change for all my pages instead of changing them one by one?

Thanks,
Gigbabbler

Hey

There is a way to do this, it's called Server Side Includes (SSI). You can read a description and brief discussion of SSI in the following thread:
