It gets spidered by google almost immediately. How does google know to spider my new page right away?

Wordpress automatically pings engines and other services. Also, WP.com blogs tags automatically get indexed as technorati tags and wordpress tags. So you have direct and indirect spidering of your blog. If you have google site map plugin installed every time you post google gets pinged.
