Default Is Yahoo Directory worth the money?

I am wondering if I should go ahead and pay to try to get in the yahoo directory, or see what I can do on my own through link building, free directories, forum posts, etc. and then apply to yahoo if that doesn't work.

Any thoughts?

You can definitely build a lot of traffic without it, but I still think if you can afford it, it may be worth it just to have a "high-quality" backlink to your site. Although some articles have come out recently saying Google doesn't give as much (if any) importance to paid links. But I think they were referring to the smaller paid directories that were created for the sole purpose of getting people to increase their backlinks. Not sure if Yahoo was included in that bunch.

What does everyone else think?

Well the Yahoo directory is something I consider a liable source of company's and informational sites, In the UK we have the Yellow Pages book which has all the business on and phone numbers so you can contact everyone.

I find yahoo an online version of that book, and that book has saved my skin many times. You can get listed in of course doing it by hand just keep promoting your site but of course you in competition with a few odd million, It just depends if you are willing to spend that kind of money and make something out of it, do you think you will get that in payback by ad serving programs such as adsense? If so then yes it is worth it.

Lisa and Rob, I agree completely. I would consider the sites in the Yahoo! directory to be of much better quality than the ones that just submit to the free ones.

If a website is willing to pay $299/year for the listing, then they must be making more than enough profit to afford it and to think it's worth the money. And since they are making that kind of money, they must be doing something right.

I am with West, 299/yr is quite a heavy cost for most small sites, there isn't as many people searching the Yahoo directory as it used to perhaps, perhaps exploring the Yahoo local business listing is a good alternative if your site is targeting local audience.

Just FYI, it's not $299/yr if your site falls into a "non commercial category". You only pay once. For example, even though my site has affiliate links it still falls in the non commercial category of "web design/development" so I was only charged once. Same for my flat stomach site.

That's it other than my affiliate nonsense blog, but that's dying a slow death. I'm canceling when my TypePad account expires. I don't have the time or energy to keep up with that one.
