Default What Google Thinks of Directory Submissions

There's been a LOT of discussion here about free and paid directories and how they are valued by the SEs, so I thought you may want to watch this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Pu1YWcIh04

I don't submit to directories anymore (except for Yahoo) for the reasons Matt mentions here. This video confirmed what I've thought all along and I have no regrets about paying for a Yahoo directory listing. It definitely carries weight, so if you can afford it, it may be worth it for a quality backlink. For the record, I only paid the $300 ONE TIME (not recurring) for all my sites because they fell into a non-commercial category.

Of course you can get traffic without a Yahoo directory listing so don't stress out if you cannot afford it. And I totally understand why some people think it's not needed. You can get into Google without it. My point is that Matt clearly stated that this directory has more value than all these fly-by-night PageRank 7 directories that spring up everywhere.

Take home point: Before you submit to a directory, check to see if they accept anyone and everyone who submits (is there any editorial control?) and are they providing a certain value that other directories don't? If they just accept anyone who submits (free or paid) then Google may devalue that directory.

I think Google still trusts DMOZ. That's why many people complain about not being listed on it. By the way, high paid directory submission is not worth anymore, in my opinion. However, Yahoo directory is exceptional.

I think they still value DMOZ too. As Matt said, any directory that has editorial control (they don't accept any and everyone) means that Google may place more value on it.

However, I've stopped trying to get in to DMOZ. 2 Create a Website was the only site that made it in. Fortunately today there are other ways to get into Google and a DMOZ listing is not as much of a necessity. I remember a time when that was an absolute MUST to get into. Thank goodness times have changed!

@ Lisa: Does a listing in yahoo directory send good traffic? come to think of it, do you think that site of yours that got listed in Dmoz found itself in a position more favorable than that of the rest?

No, I don't get much traffic at all. Maybe a few hits per day. But my sole purpose for listing with Yahoo was because I knew Google valued the link. My DMOZ listing definitely helped me back in 2002 when I first launched the site because as soon as I got listed in DMOZ, my Google traffic came immediately (literally... the next day traffic came). But that was in 2002. You no longer need DMOZ to get Google traffic.

Thanks for the prompt response - that's what my take on the matter was initially. I think much of today's dmoz fever is accounted for by that old knowledge that being listed in dmos equals to being somewhere in google.

Yahoo and DMOZ are the only to directories that really carry weight and Google respects. That's not to say that others can't provide for quality linking, but if you want to keep it safe, stick with Yahoo and DMOZ.

thanks for the heads up on the video.
as he says, google will value directories still paid and free that exercise editorial control and evaluation, and there are in fact a lot of them that i have decided from my readings around still have value as I submitted to a number of them the past 6-8 months and both the pr of my site and the serps improved and at the time that was the only new seo technique that i was using. of course one has to pick and choose and be selective....

Informative video. I'm not a big fan of Dmoz anymore. Yes, Google still gives value to it because it's an authority site, but the approval time takes forever these days. I opt to focus on other much effective linkbuilding methods that deliver results like article submission, forum posting, etc.
