Most directory submission sites are considered as farm sites. They are just there for the purpose oaf posting ads and affiliate links which makes directory submission virtually useless-to-little help.

DMOZ is very good but it has its own issues. Almost everyone try to submit site at dmoz and they don't have enough resources to even review all sites. Some very good sites are waiting for long time and some not so good are already there. I would recommend to start off with free ones. One such web directory is Page2review. It is free and approvals are fast. One good feature is it allows visitor comments and visitors can also rate websites.

For me, free and paid directory are just the same. They just differ on how fast you'll be added into their directory.

I think submitting to social bookmarks has more weight then directories do with Google.

well i run 2 directory sites [links removed] and I don't just take anyone. my site is not about just taken peoples links and adding them. we try and help people with their websites as well. look its all about advertising i still don't care what google thinks of my pagerank. if you have a name and know how to market it then your set in stone!

An experienced SEOer once explained to me that google pretty much ignores/devalues directories with a fast and breezy ''add url'' feature. It is PR what really makes the difference. A directory's PR will greatly determine how hard you will need to work to ''get in.'' This can be the monetary value (BOTW,YahooDir) $299 but also high qualitity content (LII.Librarians index etc).

I had came across such type of things. getting listing in number of directories is really worth but according to the ongoing changes in the google algo, there not so much importance given to the directory listings unless it is quality site and having some editorial control over the listings.

get listed or not on yahoo directories there are much cheaper way to get a lot of 500+ traffics a day.
