    Default Yahoo Directory and DMOZ

Okay Okay, I know it's probably been posted and asked like 1000 times but first of all.

What's up with DMOZ? Every time I check it seems like it's the same as it was 3 years ago? I know the links are valuable and it's edited by volunteers, but is it just an afterthought or what?

Yahoo directory costs $300 a year? or $300 to review and $300 a year? Regardless I don't understand.

Just how important will the link be, because if it helps my site go up in the search results, I could probably make $300 in a couple days from it.

Does anyone have their personal success story with Paying or getting listed in the Yahoo (or DMOZ) directory or has anyone experienced a dud?

I haven't heard a single success story about Yahoo. that 300 bucks seems questionable if you ask me.

Better to list one's self into DMOZ.

Some people list with the Yahoo directory for the link juice... not necessarily for the direct traffic that will come from it. No one really uses the directory much to do searches, but some people believe that Google sees that as a high-quality back link that MAY improve your Google rankings in the long run. The problem is, there is no proof of this and there is a lot of speculation around it.

I always pay for a Yahoo directory link, but I don't recommend it if you cannot afford it. It's not necessary to have a listing in the Yahoo Directory get a good Google ranking these days, but it's just something I've always done. I started doing it back in 2000 when it really did matter, and I've just continued to do so with all my sites. A personal choice.

And I only had to pay the $300 one time for all my sites because they do not fall in the "commercial" category. Yahoo doesn't really explain that well in their terms, but if your site does not fall in a commercial/shopping category, you will only be charged once. Yes, even if you have affiliate links and Google ads on your site.

I haven't been able to get a site into DMOZ since 2002. Again, it's not necessary to get into any of these directories to boost your search engine rankings. If you can get in to DMOZ, great. But if you can't, don't sweat it.

Oh, really? I thought they didn't charge non-commercial sites at all. Hmmm.

That's what many people fail to understand: once they learn about the existence of dmoz, they get so obsessed with getting in the directory that they stop seeing the priorities, i.e. actual site promotion. One should always remember that there are various nuances behind dmoz submissions, including the human factor.

Paying to be in the Yahoo directory is proof that google takes no actions against paid links or everyone in it would be canned. However $300 for a link is poor value just to have a trusted site link to you.
As for dmoz - give up on it as they can't manage the submission and it'll take years if at all to get your site listed!

I'm afraid it's not, google does penalize paid links - once you get busted, of course.

Buying or selling links that pass PageRank is in violation of Google's webmaster guidelines and can negatively impact a site's ranking in search results.

Stick to the free directories folks!
Try to avoid reciprocated links too, since they tend to gimp your ranking.
