For my Blogger blog I just use my atom.xml file as a sitemap.

All of the points discussed so far seem very valid and true.

Over time I've discovered that forums bring in a lot of traffic for me too, especially in the beginning. However it helps to post VERY helpful posts in order for others to notice you and potentially draw a new visitor, besides that it's obviously more effective posting on a forum related to your niche, but could work with any subject to an extent.

Just remember to keep a link (or more) in your sig. This is not so effective on getting higher ranking on Google perhaps but will definitely bring in some good traffic and perhaps convince someone to link to you by themselves.

Good luck!
