Google keeps the algorithm a closely held secret. Many people have been able to guess at some of the general aspects of it. For example, the more back links the better. But the details are secret.
The best you can do is to visit their Google webmaster tools website. By reading their recommendations you can infer a lot about the algorithm. If they make a recommendation that means that their algorithm takes it into account.
For a general idea of how google works, you can read the original paper written by the creators in 1995 ( http://infolab.stanford.edu/~backrub/google.html). It gives a lot of information about the general workings of the algorithm. Google has made some tweaks to it in the last 14 years. But the basic principle remains the same.

Algorithm of Google PageRank
Hi Susapra, google's algorithm is a secret even most employees working at google don't know, so to be honest no body can tell you the complete truth about the topic.
What I can tell you now is only based on research I've done myself and reveals only my personal opinion which most likely not 100% correct.
O.K here goes!!
Algorithm of Google PageRank is a system based on many factors, some of those we know and others are not, we know for sure that links from other sites are important, also adding content on a regular basis is a main factor, plus the age of the domain name these are the 3 standerds that most webmasters are sure about.
What I have researched and experimented about is the number of unique visitors you get each day, and your bounce rate.
So if you notice, as soon as you add new content to your site you are ranked relatively higher then usual on the search engine for that content, if somebody visits your site through there and then leaves right away that page will go down but if after reading your article that user clicks a link and goes to another page on your site then you've passed the google test.
If you pass the test for a large number of articles then google will realize that your content is liked by searchers whis is the most important thing for google, then they will start giving you a page rank.
This is my theory based on my study and research, it may be correct and may be wrong so don't take it for granted, and experiment a little your self and tell us what you find out.
cheers, Amr

mirage2009 can google know a website's bounce rate without a script on the page?
If you have their analytics script, or adsense, on your website then google knows the bounce rate. But without either of these then I do not understand how google would know the bounce rate.

they can't get the details without you adding the analytics script.
but they know that the benefits they give with analytics is more then enough bait to get you to add it to your site

well said, google is really getting better at detecting seo, so the best thing is not to try to hard with keyword saturation, but rather just make sure each page has unique content and also i would recommend validating each page of your site with the w3c.

PageRank is Google's method of ranking individual web pages. Google looks at the pages which link to your page and how they rank in terms of importance. In a nutshell, pages that have links from important, high quality pages, receive a higher PageRank. Google combines PageRank with sophisticated text-matching techniques to find pages which are both important and relevant to your search.
Cheers!

Hi everyone,
Google Removes PageRank Data from Webmaster Tools
Here is the article http://www.seroundtable.com/archives/020960.html
If you read the article you will see that ironically page rank still appears on the toolbar, but it is useless so please ignore it.
I am going to post this link again as a new thread so that everyone will see it.
Thanks.
