Interesting Traffic Spike! Thanks Google & Hostgoator
A few days ago, I got an email from Hostgator about suspending my account based on too much spam activity. I admit, I have stopped showing love to the website in question. I actually bought it as an experiment after I learned a little about SEO. I wanted to see how long it would take to get a decent Google ranking and if I could make it my most successful project up to date.
I was very good at putting up websites and taking them down because not being a qualified programmer, it was very hard to articulate the website the way I envisioned it. So when it didn't work, I reworked them. I don't believe Google liked that too much and my search activity reflected.
I had estimated that 3 months from the time I purchased the domain last year, that I would work at it, promote it and see where the chips fell. Within that time frame, I was able to get a pr 2 ranking and get some type of traffic to the website. I had almost a thousand visitors a day by chasing low traffic keywords.
A month ago, a significant impact in the search results. I never investigated the issue because I had moved on and stopped caring about the website. I should have investigated, but I figured Google just didn't like me. I got a message from my host the other day that my site was resuming too much resources. they advised I used a captcha, which I didn't know I had disabled at some point.
The next day my traffic increased dramatically. It literally increased everyday since I fixed that small issue and I'm wondering if someone posted a trending topic or if that is what was holding me back. Time will tell. But for now, I am enjoying the extra love. I haven't posted an article on the website myself in a few months, so this is surprising. Gotta thank Hostgator for sending me that message and Google for increasing my traffic.
The lesson to be learned here is always check the technology on your website and make sure it is properly configured. If you don't know how to do that, then use someone you trust or pay someone to do it for you. I believe this is one of the benefits of using Lisa's service. It's smaller than the big giants out there, so the company can pay more attention to your website, like Hostgator did with mine. Now my site saves them resources and I noticed a traffic increase. It's a win win.
So perhaps due to the increased activity (using up resources), Googlebot may have had trouble spidering your site. You were probably getting attacked by bots trying to submit your forms. I've had that happen. Congrats on your increase.
Yes, that's exactly what Hostgator wrote and said happened, Lisa. Though the traffic is not targeted at all, no traffic is useless. So I do a feel a little better that I did get to experience seeing an increase. Leave it to Google to send an increase of traffic to the website you care less about. LMAO!
