Why not just use google's? I hear good things about Market Samurai but why pay if you don't have to.

Whenever I read a topic like this, the Google AdWords Keyword Tool is almost always the top mention.

    Hi zourkas,

You will have to have a Google Adwords account to see the average cost per click; for your specific keyword.

    Hope this helps,
    Mike

I keep on wondering about this and GKT always comes out the best. Thing is GKT doesn't tell you about competition, hence you find that many webmasters do not solely rely on it. It shows you search demand and advertiser competition, but you need a tool that will show you SEO competition: who are you gonna be competing with to rank high for your chosen keyword. Some prefer to use market samurai, SBI's tools, traffic travis etc. to go beyond just keyword research.

Here is my take on things.

If you are going to build one site and looking to save money, then the google keyword research tool is the way to go.

If you are going to build a bunch of sites, then you will need something that makes the process quicker like market samurai, traffic travis, etc. These tools will help you save a lot of time. But of course you have to pay for them. You can do everything you need to do with google's tool (provided you have an account with them) and some common sense, along with knowing a little bit about the market.

I use Traffic Travis. It is not as much money as Market Samurai and it is very good. It lets me do a lot of other things besides keyword research. I found a discount coupon code on-line somewhere and I think I paid about $37 or $47 dollars for it. There is a free trial version also. I highly recommend Traffic Travis.

I use Keyword Fighter to generate lots of keywords in my niche.

Google adwords keyword tool will only give you data about a few keywords. And generally this data is not enough.

I also use Market Samurai to analyze my competition. Here are the factors that I go for:
    - The keyword has at least 1000 local search volume in US (exact).
    - The CPC is above $1.
    - There are at least 2 websites on page 1 of google with a PR of 0 for the keyword.

Besides this, I manually search for the keyword in google and gauge the competition and just go with my gut.

However, I'm starting to get into autoblogs where I just need to feed the long tail keywords list from Keyword Fighter to my wordpress plugin.

    No competition analysis required.
