I usually submit my site to a directory and forget about the whole thing. I rarely keep track of the link.
However, if you need the list of free directories to submit your site, download http://info.vilesilencer.com/seo-friendly-list.xls

This list contains about 450+ general directories and several number of niche directories.

To make directory submission simpler you may consider using Roboform or some other automated form filling software. I think there is a free addon for firefox with the same functionality as roboform, but I never tested it. Here is the link https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4775.

Also there is a software called submiteaze (www. submiteaze.com) which semi-automates directory submission. They also provide an updated list of directories with it.

Thanks for the info ncaditya.

I have a another question for you guys. This is regarding google and alexa crawls. Lisa i know you may have an answer to this.

I submitted my site to joeant.com about 10 days. But the site hasn't been crawled by google or alexa for inbound links. Does it usually take that long? My site appear in 5th level of the directory and is the only site in that category.
Directory: Computers ~ Programming ~ Languages ~ PHP
http://www.joeant.com/DIR/cat/20914/PHP

I am waiting patiently for google to crawl my link

And once the crawl is done by google, how will it measure my site? Will i see a change in PR?

Hey Webdev,

10 days is very quick and Joeant alone is not going to make a dent in your PR. Remember inbound links from related sites are still the most important thing Google looks for. Especially these days.

Another thing that Google checks is how long people stay on your site. I know you mentioned people were leaving quickly. You may want to start experimenting with your content to see if you can increase the amount of time your visitors stay. That is huge.

Also it's been 2 years since I submitted my SBI site to Joeant and some of those other directories and Google probably assigns a different weight to those kinds of submissions today versus two years ago. My point is how they handle it today may be different than in 2005. And also directories aren't the only thing they are looking for. I had submitted quite a few ezinearticles and swapped links with other related sites.

I do remember though that it took at least 4-5 months before I got a PR of 4. And I didn't start getting much Google traffic until the 6th month. Then after about a year the traffic really started pouring in from Google.

PR is so overrated these days. About 4-5 years ago it was a much bigger deal but now it's not a must to boost your PR to get Google traffic.

So true about PR. Here's a good article on this...

Wow! i had no idea I thought pagerank determined your ranking on google index. I got this misconception from some of these big seo forums like the webmasterworld and devshed. People there always talking about their page ranks and how important it is. lol...it makes me giggle thinking that i thought these guys knew what they were doing...hehe.

Yep! that's a huge problem for me. People don't stay. Not sure if it is my writing style or the design. I do notice some typos and grammatical mistakes on my pages. I correct them as i see them.
I'm still experimenting and so far no luck. Bounce rate is still high. I'll play around with my content now to see of that brings any change in the bounce rate.

Pagerank and ranking in search engine positions are entirely different things.

A site on fisheries may become PR4 if it is linked to by many PR5 sites on search engine optimization, however it will never rank on the top for any keyword related to fisheries because the back links to the site are from search engine optimization related websites.

I accept that page rank has its own advantages. When, you try to sell a site, the first question anybody asks is "What is the PR?", nobody asks "How much traffic does your site get?". In fact, the latter is all that matters. A PR4 site with 10 visitors a day or a PR0 site with 250 visitors a day, which is better? Obviously the latter! However, even experienced webmasters are addicted to stereotype thinking. It is time to change the way we think.

I think the only reason people care about page ranks so much is because it visible to everyone. That's the only thing people can measure how popular the site is.
Traffic is what counts in my books as well but i get thrown away by this pagerank phenomena since almost all the so called SEos just talk about pageranks on the forums and nothing else.

I'm just glad that as a newbie, i have come to know this fact that targeted traffic is what counts

It is very difficult to get into DMOZ.

There are some great smaller free and paid directories that you can submit to.

Yahoo Directory $299 pa
JoeAnt
Search Monster
