Default Google, bing and yahoo traffic compared

While I was looking at my google analytics account this morning, I decided that I would go ahead and post these numbers.

I would have never thought that bing traffic would have been so targeted and google so un-targeted.

Source ----- pages per visit ------ time on site ----- bounce rate

Google ---------- 7.05 -------------- 00:08:29 ---------- 56.35%
Yahoo ----------- 17.21 ------------- 00:20:52 ---------- 22.85%
Bing ------------- 19.13 ------------- 00:23:09 ---------- 21.50%

It appears to me that google provides the least targeted traffic, with an average 56.35% bounce rate. While Bing and Yahoo have bounce rates in the 21% - 22% range.

Out of the three, bing seems to provide the best traffic. I wish all of my traffic was as targeted as yahoo and bing.

Total amount of traffic for this site in the past 30 days:

3,602,335 Pageviews
356,454 Visits
166,613 Visitors

IT really really depends on your site and how each search engine likes it.

I have one site that has these stats:
yahoo (organic) 58 72.50%
bing (organic) 12 15.00%
google (organic) 2 2.50%

It is a site for 210 acres that I am selling in Upper Michigan. Google hardly knows I exist and yahoo is giving me my exact keyword match I want for top 3 ranking.

Another is just the opposite
google (organic) 48 57.83%
yahoo (organic) 8 9.64%
bing (organic) 3 3.61%

It is my personal site about Bill and my passion for fishing. It looks amateurish yet and I haven't touched it in over a year, so page rank slipped from 3 to 2. I fished professionally for over 10 years but took this year off for family medical reasons and economy.

The bottom line is each search engine has the items it loves and hates, the trick is to feed each of them what they want.

Good Luck

Kev, when you are specifically looking a bounce rate, I would think that the source of the difference has to do with the fact that there are just so many people using Google search compared to the others. You don't provide the counts for total number of hits, so I am just guessing.

I have used Google analytics for a few years (for my day job) and the bounce rate is always higher from google but so are the number of hits - by far.

Let me know if that is the case for you.

You also need to look at the keywords you are getting traffic for from each of the search engines, its likely that the traffic you are getting from Bing and Yahoo are from long tail keywords, so the traffic will be more targeted.

I have def read before that yahoo and bing provide more targeted visitors, but google by far provides the most traffic, way more than google and yahoo. In fact i never see yahoo traffic on my sites.

Each search engine in general has a specific target audience. I think google users are the most tech/web savvy.

Bing have been advertising a lot lately, and trying to tell that they have much more accurate results than google and yahoo, but what if the budget ends and once bing has been the center of optimization, a lot of black hat strategies will surely pop out, and this is what the problem might be.. bing will definitely change its algorithm quickly like weekly or monthly and it is hard to identify unlike google which is a much stable search engine.

by the way could you state what site you have acquired 3,602,335 page views this month? and could you also tell us what have you done that get you a much higher amount of traffic on bing instead of google or yahoo? I was just curious because my website's traffic comes from around
41% on google
19% on yahoo
5% on bing
while the other traffic comes from direct typing of URL on browser and other social media sites.
