please tell me how the meta tags help the site to get more traffic.

Meta tags are not used for search engine ranking so much any more, but they do have a related importance.

In your head you must have a title. This will appear in the bar at the very top of your browser (where Website Babble Webmaster Forums appears on this page. But this also appears on google (or other search engine) search when it lists your page making this very important in seo because people will look at it and make a decision on whether to look at your site or not.

The meta tag for "description" is used in a similar fashion and will also usually appear in the search listings after the title. This is like a sales line for you and can make a big difference in whether people will consider coming to your page instead of another.

Meta tags can not affect the traffic. Google actually disregard the used of meta keywords and has no effect on Google rankings. But it is still a good practice to put meta tags on your site like for meta description it serves as a snippet on the result page. And also, other search engines are accepting meta tags.
