Reciprocal links are when website A links to website B and website B links back to website A
Not something I engage in anymore, I did in the early days.
Best to get one way links but if that's proving difficult, I guess reciprocal links are better than none

When web sites link to each other, either directly or indirectly through a number of different pages, a search engine might consider those links to be reciprocal links. If you’re familiar with some of the mythology and folklore surrounding search engine optimization, you may have read or heard that reciprocal links are bad, and that search engines don’t like them.

Well explained.. I also did some reciprocal links before and some worked but some didn't.. Reciprocal links are usually required when you submit your website to free directories.. Instead of paying, directories ask you to place a link of their website on your website..

I've often called it a link exchange. I have pretty much stopped exchanging with other websites. I used to get links through directory sites that were free. Most of them required that I post a link on my site pointing to theirs if I wanted them to point one to my website.

Reciprocal link, it's an exchange of links equally. Both parties benefit. Operative term is reciprocate.

A reciprocal link is an agreement between two webmasters to provide a hyperlink within their own website to each other's web site. Generally this is done to provide readers with quick access to related sites, or to show a partnership between two sites. Reciprocal links can also help to increase traffic to your web site in two ways. First you will probably have some viewers visit your site from clicking the reciprocal link directly. Secondly, most Internet search engines also take into account the number of web sites which contain links to your web site; the more hyperlinks to your site found, the higher up in the search engine rankings (depending on the search term) you'll find your site.

A link offered to another site on the condition that you gain one in return.

to make it simpler, it is placing a link on other site and having that site linked back to you. does it makes sense?
