Hi i'm a computer programmer and I have recently found out about Google AdSense.
I did some research and found out about people making money off ads on their webpage! I have never created a website before, but I want to start one very soon.

The things that are going through my mind right now are:

1.) Best place to get a domain name.

2.) Places to help build a website. I've heard of WordPress, SBI. But with I don't really want to pay $299 a year or $29 a month for SBI.... I've heard WordPress is more catered toward blogs. When I google'd WordPress the top link sent me go go daddy.com. And there are 3 options they provide Economy, Deluxe, Ultimate each $4.24, $5.94, $8.49 in order. Seems a hell of a lot better then $29 a month.

3.) And the main and biggest one. IDEAS for a website. The only way I would really get any traffic on my page is that if my website is all about something new and big, a hype if you will. I have some hobbies but I don't see how people reading my blogs/posts will earn me any money. When I visit a webpage I don't click on those pesky ads on the side bars.


A lot for a first post, but I just want to gain knowledge on websites. I'm young and am more tech-savy then most people. Any and all help would be great for now all I want to do is start my own website and worry about gaining traffic once i'm up and live. THANKS SO MUCH

Glad to have you join the forum, a great place to learn and share.

There are lots of threads about each of your questions on the forum so you can do a search and find lots of information.

A few basics:

There is no best place to get a domain name or purchase hosting. You will find lots of recommendations on this forum and everywhere else you can imagine! Most of them are for hosts that no one has heard of made by people who know little about them, often as affiliate links for profit. Choose on of the major players like hostgator (the most recommended) or Dreamhost (which I prefer and have used for years—they have over a million sites hosted). They all have a search feature to determine if the domain name you want is available.

As far as help with the site, the choices you mentioned all have different prices but you get something different with each one. SBI is a little more expensive but they teach you everything you need to know to make money with your site and offer lots of tools with a step by step approach for those who best succeed that way. Some of us are more independent and want to operate on our own even if it takes longer.

WordPress is not just for blogs. You can produce both pages and blog posts with the program and at this time a little over half of all sites are being started with WordPress. If you go that route don't even think of the free wordpress.com, get your own domain and your host (any good one) will install it for you.

You are correct, you do not get paid for someone reading your blog, but you won't make any money if no one reads either! There are many ways to earn from a site and everyone follows a somewhat different approach. Read Lisa's site associated with this post. You won't find anyone with better info to follow. Watch her videos on YouTube if you like video. And read through a lot of the forum.

The main thing about choosing a topic is to pick one that you can work on for years because if it is not something you can really enjoy and stay with you will get tired and bored before achieving anything. You will find a lot of threads about choosing your "niche" as well.
