Hello all,
I'm Martin and I'm taking a shot at building a website and running a set of forums. Of course I would like to make a living from this site but as for now I'm on the path to learn as much as possible. My website is almost up, I bought space on hostgator.com and am using NetObjects Fusion to build my site and am still debating on if I want to spend the time and learn phpbb3 or invest the money and get vBulletin... suggestions, comments from experience?
My site is going to be about sustainable land development and I want to build a set of forums covering land development from the eyes of the developer all the way to the next door neighbor.
I'm totally game for constructive critisizm but I would like to learn as much as possible to get on the fast track to a successful website. So obviously I will be spending a bunch of time around here.
Glad to have you here. What else are you going to do with your site besides forums? The reason I ask is it's not a good idea to start off with a forum if you have no traffic.
I always recommend between 500 and 1000 visitors per day before you launch a forum. Although if you have a very niche site then you may not need that many. I tried to launch a forum years ago when my site was brand new and I could never get enough traffic to the forum to make it successful. I had to close it due to lack of activity. So I built up my content on my site, learned how to generate search engine traffic then I launched my forum when I had enough visitors. That's how I recommend you start.
Read up on SEO (search engine optimization) and learn what it takes to get free traffic. Then you can focus on learning PHP and all the other things you want to improve your site.
