Default Starting from Scratch!

Hello Lisa, and fellow Website Babble friends. My name is Kevin and I'm new here. I joined this forums because the information here is very valuable. I've been building and working on websites for about 7 years now, and it's sad to say that I'm just now getting to the point where I'm learning about how to make money with websites. Not being in the loop on the new things of the internet and it's constant progress can really set you back a few years. So, i'm here to STAY IN THE LOOP and try to maximize on the information here as well as network with people to generate new website ideas.

First of all, i'm no writer. I'm more of a designer. So, understanding that writing is the key to the whole "information super-highway" era will definitely have me thinking outside my box. However, I do know that information is knowledge and knowledge is power and people will search for just about anything on the internet these days.

So, I thank you Lisa for constructing such an avenue to allow people like me to STAY IN THE LOOP and I look forward to getting new ideas and collaborating with everyone here.

In Journey to Success

Kevin Camon

Welcome, Kevin. Glad to have you here. I may have to pick your brain in the design arena. I'm actually just the opposite and I prefer marketing/writing. BUT I just redesigned one of my sites and I used all CSS and SSI and I hope to launch it today. I'm so excited and so mad I didn't rely on CSS more. I've always used it some but for this site I used nothing but CSS for nearly everything (tables, bullets, image alignment, you name it!). Gosh it makes things soooooooo much easier.

Anyway, welcome!

Personally I'm probably half and half I have an interest in both the design and writing concept but I'm definitely not well experienced in either. Theres lots of good writers here you should look around some of the forum archives or lisa blog for a start and you will find some pretty interesting stuff.

Great to have you here and welcome to WebsiteBabble.

Cool Starting from scratch: Question 1

Ok guys, I know how to design a website but I want to try something a little different. Since i'm a little new on the whole blog thing, I want to see what's available out there in the blog world. I'm helping a friend start a blog about politics (can you image all the widgets that needs to go in there?) and I found a blog site that may be close to what I would like to do. However, I can't seem to find out what blog service they're using. Can any of you figure out what it is? Here's the link: http://technorati.com/politics/. one thing i've realized is that a lot of blog sites are done in php (something that I don't know much about.) But I can see where it's needed with all the interactivity with blogs these days. Has anyone come across a blog service that offers user friendly features and setup?

Hey Kevin

I'm confused. The page you sent us to is just Technorati's landing page. It's not a blog. It's the landing page for the Politics section of their site. Are you talking about a specific blog or do you just mean the Technorati site in general?

Default Technorait Site

Sorry for the confusion Lisa. I guess what I was saying is the blog format itself. I was assuming that this site was generated using an online blog service. I saw something on there that said Blogger Central. I knew I saw that term somewhere before so I assummed that it was something like wordpress. Anyways, maybe that was a bad example.

Basically what i'm looking for is a user friendly blogging service that has all the widget and feature abilities that doesn't require any knowledge of php or asp.

This page will give you a better idea of what i'm looking for: http://technorati.com/blogging/

I bet you could accomplish something like this with a CMS like Joomla. Have you looked into them? That's a good solution if you want to create a site with dynamic content without knowing much about PHP, etc.

Hey Lisa,

I'm curious...Is the site you just finished re-designing the flat-stomach site?

It looks like you're using CSS to change the link and background color for your navigation...You might want to change the hover color of your text to something else than white. It's really hard to read. I'm sure you're aware of this but just thought I'd drop you a line.

Good job on the implementation of the CSS. The site looks good.

Hi Levi, thanks for the tip. It's actually a very light pink. Just curious what browser are you using? I didn't think it was hard to read but maybe it's just me.

Hey Lisa -

I viewed the site with Firefox. The site looks great, just the navigation text is a little hard to read when you hover over it. The background is a nice shade of pink, but the text is white and maybe it's just me but it seems hard to read.

Just a thought.

Levi.

That's what is confusing me. The nav text is set to black and is black when I hover over it. That's why I asked what browser you're using?

Nevermind, I fixed it. The problem was my "visited" nav hover text was set to black so since I had visited all my pages the hover text was showing black on my set. So I cleared my cache and history and saw exactly what you could see. So I checked my style sheet and sure 'nuff, I had the "never visited" links to white and didn't realize it.

Thanks for pointing that out! People probably thought I was nuts. If you hadn't pointed that out I probably never would have caught that. That's what I get for borrowing some of my CSS code from my 2create site. Oops!

No problem, Lisa. I thought I was tripping there for a sec. Glad you fixed it. Good job on the re-design!

Keep it up.
