Default Question on documents

My questions is: what would make documents I save show up as Thunderbird documents. This comes up such as when I scan our companies inquires and then I open one to attach to an email. They didn't start doing this until very recently. I don't use anything Thunderbird such as emails etc. It's not even loaded on my computer.

I also know my emails have just about poofed away. It wouldn't effect my gmail mail would it?
