Red face Password Protected WebSites

PLEASE someone help me!

I had created a website for my team and had found out by my corporate office that I have to password protect my site. I've contacted the host (register.com) regarding this and they said that I have to buy another package called Web Hosting. I'm not sure what the difference is but would like to know how I can go about adding the password protected option. Do I have to buy another package or can I just add an option to protect what I have now?

Also, what is the best web hosting out there?

Thanks!

Welcome Rosalyn,

That's a very strange answer your host gave. If you already have a website up and running then you already have a host and should already have everything you need. Password protection is simply a script (bunch of code) you install on your own site to make it work so not why they want you to buy something else.

Go to godaddy.com and use one of their hosting plans if you want to switch hosts. I wouldn't buy another package with them. Can you tell me the name of your host? Maybe the type of host you have will explain some things.

Hi ppcFanatic,

Well the thing is, the website is still in the making. I haven't launched it yet online. I bought my domain name and the package from register.com.

So do you mean I can actually use what I have now and just upload the codes for the site to be password protected? How do I do that? I would love to test that out before I go buy another package.

Thank you so much for replying.

Ahhh..I see so the site is not live yet. Yes, you do need a host so go ahead and sign up with their package. I wish you had come here first though there are so many more cheaper hosts than register.com But anyway yes sign up for their cheapest hosting package (you can always upgrade later if you need more space). But they are right. You can't actually launch a site without a host. The domain name is just the first step.

If you want you can still go to godaddy.com and use them to host your site. You don't have to stick with register.com just 'cause you registered your domain there. Godaddy's prices start at $3.99 per month. Can register.com beat that?

Once you've signed up with hosting, go to Google and do a search for a password protection script and you should be able to find instructions on how to password protect your page/site.

Hy Rosalyn!

As far as I see your situation you already have a domain name, but need a web host.

My advice is actually to get web hosting account separate from your domain registrar. There is a simple reason for that. Once you want to change hosts you will not have any problems. Otherwise they might complicate when you want to leave.

Which is the best web hosting?
If you are just starting out, i recommend you get a shared hosting account - which is more than enough for most websites. You will get lots of space, data transfer and lots of emails for your team.

I warmly advice you not to select web hosting only by price. In your situation best support, that would be able to help you - would be a better choice.

When creating a first website -support is the one that decides if you will have a positive hosting experience.

Most user friendly hosting I use, are Bluehost and Lunarpages. They both have an extensive forum, knowledge base and video tutorials, which are a life saver for beginners. (There is a more detailed description of those two on my website)

Once you will buy your hosting package you will get access to Control Panel - that is a place where you will set up email accounts and password protect your site.

There is an option to protect the whole website or just specific folders. In both cases your visitors (members of your team) will have to enter a username and password to be able to access it.

The other option is a script as ppcfanatic advises, but it is a more complicated way.

If you have any other questions: Website Babble is the place.
