Default Control Panel details

My present Web design Company are refusing to give the username and password for Control Panel. I need access as I have engaged a different Web Company to re-design my site and they need the Control Panel details. The Domain name is registered in my name.Do I have a legal right to have access to the Control Panel? Any reason why they are refusing to supply the details?

Thats the problem, they design your site and charge for minor changes.

Does this company host your site and your domain? Im sure we can help you with this but we need a little more info.

- Have they already designed the site?
- Did you pay for hosting and the domain name with them as well?

I've run into a few web design companies who seem to think holding someone's domain hostage is good business. I can see why they would want to maintain control of their work and not lose customers, but honestly, if a client is that unhappy with my work that he wants to leave, I'm perfectly okay with turning over the access info, after determining, of course, whether there's any way I can convince him to stay.

Two of my recent clients lost the domain names they had used for years and years because the former company refused to turn it over and they had nothing in writing. The problem especially comes up when the administrative contact on the domain is not you. It often doesn't matter if the registrant listed is you; the administrative contact is the one with the power. I always list my client as the admin contact, since it's their domain, not mine. I just register it for them.

That said, it kind of depends on what the contract stated when you hired them. I'm sure some have it worded in such a way that it could prevent you from reclaiming control of your name. Make sure in future that you request to be listed as admin. In my opinion, any above-board web design firm should be okay with that.

Just to clarify things: Company A designed the Website......Company A pay Company B to host the site. I have engaged Company C to redesign the Site and provide me with CMS, they need access to Control Panel which Company A are reluctant to give me .
I paid for the domain name which is registered in my name and I am the admin contact also. Hope this makes things clearer

The solution is to cut out company A and B. Back up the files company A designed for you. Move web host upload the files to this new host (saving money) then you can change the nameservers on the domain name to point to your new host.

Then you can give company C the info for your control panel. There is no need for company A to be included anymore unless your paying them for updates such as SEO services etc.

The problem is you will need access to the control panel to back up your files, you must also be able to log into your domain, if it's with company A your going to have to move it to someone such as Godaddy.

I know companies try to stop you doing this. I had my domain with a drag and drop hosting company and they tried to keep my domain name. So I spoke to them on the phone demanding they transfer my domain and cancel my hosting.

You need to contact your current hosting provider as you have mentioned that "I paid for the domain name which is registered in my name and I am the admin contact also. Hope this makes things clearer".

In this case you have the access of admin email of your domain so that you can get the details. Hence, as early as possible contact your hosting provider.

I am looking at this and the first thing that pops in my head is did you sign a contract with company A? If you did what are the stipulations of this contract? Did you give them the right to lock you out of it to protect the stability of the website? If you signed a contract I would look very close at it and make sure that you did not sign away any rights. Just cause you are the owner of the site or url does not mean you can do what ever you want if you are in a contract that states this.
