Default Image size limits (recommendations)

What is a reasonable image size to allow for a forum? I'm using SMF software which has thumbnail preview (nice). The SMF software image default size is 128 KB, is this really sufficient for a site that is not really high traffic?

Also: Is there a reference available to help visitors (& me) understand images sizes? ie pixels vs cm vs KB?

For example: the board limits images to 128 KB, using the Microsoft Photo Editor drop-down choices are: either cm, inches or pixels.

I can up the image limit..just not sure where it should be set.

thanks

I'll have to login to my admin and see what mine is set to. But you really just have to monitor it and see. If you have a TON of space with your hosting then you may want to bump it up but you also have to remember that if people start posting a lot of large images, it will slow the page loading down. (Although most people have high speed so it isn't as much of an issue as before). I've never really heard of a recommended size for forums. I think I went with the defaults on most of mine and adjust accordingly as people use the forum.

Sounds to me like you should set it to pixels since that's what is typically used to measure images on the web. So you have a limit for file size and actual size of image?
