I HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT WEBSITE SECURITY...wasn't sure where to put it
hi
anyway guys, it's clear that nobody uses the internet without antivirus software and I am aware of a program called hackersafe which protects creditcard info on sites where you make purchases through credit cards
my question is, on a site on which there is only information and nothing to buy, is it necessary to have some sort of websecurity system
for instance, in order to block hackers placing trojan horses and the like on my site, do i need some sort of programme, or am I just being paranoid
You still need to consider security even if there is nothing being sold.
If you are on a shared hosting account the host will look after the security of the server or at least they should. They are responsible for running anti-viruses, patching software and keeping up to date. You would be responsible for making sure your passwords are strong and files are chmod correctly.
If you are running a dedicated server that would be a different story.
You have to be particular about security if you are running scripts. Recently, somebody found out a flaw in wordpress. No action in such a case could be very dangerous.
Scripts that are used less and have a smaller programming team are usually more vulnerable. It would be a good idea to stick to open source scripts. These have a large user/developer base and vulnerabilities will get fixed very fast (usually within a few hours after detection).
