Default Own a forum? your assistance is needed.

In the last few days, we have started getting spammed by nonsense ads linking to some crappy sites. I've been deleting the users and adding them to the spam database, but it's clear they are going to keep shifting IP's. What's the point in these useless sites anyway?. I've included some of these links below. Can somebody with some expirience explain it to me?

[removed links to sites.]

I have the same problem. Do you use vbulletin? If so, you may want to check out vbulletin.org They've got some anti spam hacks you can add on. I've tried a few but unfortunately they weren't compatible with my version and I kept getting bugs. Let's just hope that the next release has better spam guards.

This is a couple of weeks old, but yeah --

This seems to be a pretty widespread problem; it's plagued quite a few of my friends' forums. It seems that enabling CAPTCHA and IP banning the spam bots does little in terms of stopping the spam.

The best solution I've seen is for new registrants to be placed under moderator queue, meaning that the first X posts they make must be approved by a moderator or admin. After the X posts, the queue is lifted and the user can go on posting normally. It seems tedious, but this was done on a really popular and busy forum, so it's possible apparently.

my forum had similar issues, i found the best bet was adding a CAPTCHA and verification email. That usually stops most spam. I found as my forum started to grow and grow the spam also died down.

Yes, I've considered doing this but was concerned about the workload, but as you said it may be worth it. I found a plugin that doesn't allow links in posts up to a certain post count. Some bots can still get through but it's really cut down spam here by at least 70%.
