hey mirage,
great ideas. the main item that I think new website builders overlook is the sheer size of images. It is possible to have a very nice site without using a ton of hi-res/large images. You can do things like use thumbnails for your images instead of allowing the browser to scale large images. It takes more work, but will make your site load much faster and allow you to have hi-res images available to those who want to see them, while not making everyone download them.
the other item that i think is great that you point out is the use of flash (and other plugins for that matter). I don't like them all that much, but you can use them sparingly. Sometimes, users jsut don't feel like installing new software just to see your site. Lastly, if the user is using a machine that they don't own/have permission to install software then you're out of luck there too. If you do use plugins make sure that the information that you put in the plugins is not critical to the user.
