Question Managing Time To Build Websites

As a an up and coming webmaster still having to work the 9 to 5 and take care of the little ones it is difficult for me to stay focused on my site.
I was just wondering what suggestions you guys have about time management.
I know this is slightly off of the subject of building websites but it is very closely related because time is everything.
So what do you guys think?

The internet wasn't that popular when my kids were little. But, I still had to wait until everyone went to sleep to practice my guitar.

During breaks at work and when you get a spare few minutes at home, think about content. For that matter, you can think about content(but not too hard) while driving to work, doing household chores, watching the kids practice soccer/softball/football, etc. Jot down ideas on paper and save them for later when you do get in front of the computer.

It may seem like it's a slow process.
But, it eventually works out.
Quality is what really matters ... first for family ... then for the other stuff.

Great advice noelma1117... A moment here and a moment there adds up to something substantial rather quickly. Best of luck.

Hi Josh...I can definitely relate here....

I balance kids, work, a very active scouting life, and volunteering at my daughter's school with trying to build a website (oh yeah..and being a wife too!).

I try to spend any and all free time doing something..even if it is a tiny detail. I spend lots of exhausting nights and evenings on for a few hours after the rest of the household is sleeping.

Of course my site is going much slower than I would like it to but every page up is a victory for me and I know in the long run my successes will bring me more time....and more sleep too!!!

Yep, you definitely need to dance around the family if you want to be a freelance web designer. I tend to get up an hour earlier than I need to in the morning and get something accomplished before heading off to my day job. My kids are older so waiting for them to go to bed doesn't buy me a lot of time. Often I carve out a few hours on the weekend. Having a laptop I think is key because while I am working I can be near my family and not shackled to a desk in the basement or away from the family.

Sometimes I'll take my laptop and work while the kids are at church youth group, etc.

One of the things I learned over time is, You need to schedule everything. Get a calendar. Too many things can grab your attention during the course of a week. If you plan the time out that you want to work on your site, it will happen more often. Even if you have to reschedule because something important came up, put it on your schedule. You'll get a lot more done that way. Not only on your website, but in life in general.

Smile Thanks

I really appreciate all of you guy's input as it is great advise... and to think I look at calendar everyday Alpha, and didn't think to shedule everything. I only look at the big things like doctors appointments and the 1st and the 15th. I guess I just wing it with the little things until they get big. This Will Change! Thanks.

Funny thing= there's a lot of down time at work lately so when i'm told to make myself look busy I get alot done on my website. So in a way it is paying off, just not the way I intended, which is through commissions.

Thanks again guys.

Sssshhh - your boss might be right here on the board building his own website, too! You could end up with more than enough time on your hands to get yours done...

Man...if it weren't for your name I would think it was me posting your quote!
I too have a full time job. Kids and Grandkids all growing up right before my eyes.

Here is my schedule.
1. Get up at 5a.m. Answer questions from my subscribers. Get about 4-10 questions per day. I try to write at least one article in the morning before taking my daughter to school.
2. Get to work at 9 am....Lunch at 12.... do some blogging and eating at the same time.
3. Get off at 5 pm (wife picks up daughter from school). 5:30 pm work on my websites again. SEO, keyword research, adding and editing new pages etc....
4. 7:00pm help with homework and try to have dinner and conversation.
5. 9:00pm Read my email way too much spam....
6. 10:00pm do my best to close my eyes and sleep until 5:00am.
7. Wake up and start the whole process all over again.

My days off are Thursdays and Friday. Do my best to write more articles and blog some more.
Paul

Wow Paul! Are you ever a busy man! I really admire your drive, motivation, and hard work. I've noticed that all the people I know of who make a lot of money online have one in thing in common - hard work. It looks like you are well on your way to success. Keep up the good work!
