Well, depending on the visitors screen resolution, your website will preview differently. On my screen, (resolution is 1024x768) your website has about 2 inches on the screen on each side of black background.. I know for my screen resolution Lisa's site fills up my entire monitor, and her site width is 1000 pixels.. My site is 850px so people with really low screen resolution can fit it on their screen.

But its a personal opinion.

Hope that helps somewhat.. (what an over use of the word screen up there.. )

I just noticed that my page height is set at 3,000 (making my site 760x3,000)

Should it be set that high...hrrmmm?? Think I'm gonna go with 850 or 900 for width.

Default Better a little wider for sure.

Most monitors are 1024 pixels now so the 760 is a little narrow.

That sounds about right because most popular sites fall in that range and many are closer to 1,000.

When I switched to fixed width, I usually went between 950 and 1000. The leaves just a bit on either side for a resolution of 1024x768.

For the ultimate sizing, creating a fluid layout is best, but some times sites don't look good when stretched out on widescreen monitors. I tried a fluid layout, managed to get it to work, but have since gone back to fixed width.

Default You are not alone.

My experience is the same, TechieGuy. For a while I had the idea that I was "advancing" by moving on from fixed to fluid widths but as with a lot of other things I decided that learning more difficult ways of doing things is not necessarily better.

Soon I concluded that the havoc it caused to my layouts by the changing widths, although you can anticipate and design with it in mind, are just not worth any benefits of the fluid widths. At least in general.

So for any of you newer webmasters, try it if you like and quite a few do, but I think there are better uses of your time than spending it learning to use fluid widths.

I keep my blog at 790 because most of my users are on 1024x768 but there's a good chunk still on 800x600. I think you should take a look at your stats and see which majority rules.
