I notice some websites have a sitemap link in their footer, some websites dont have any links and sometimes you can type /sitemap.html and it pulls up their sitemap even though they dont have it linked.. so it seems that it is somewhat important, I just dont know why..
Thanks.

Sitemaps are primarily created for search engines to crawl and easily find/index pages of a website. Although some websites will have a sitemap available for their users to find important pages, other choose not to link to their sitemap and leave it for the search engines to find.
It's recommended you should create a html and xml sitemap for the search engines, whether you decide to link to your sitemap or not is up to you. You can use this website to create a xml sitemap and html sitemap.

Once these files are created this website will allow you to download the sitemaps. Download them and upload them to your public_html directory.
Now it will be easier for search engines to find and index your pages.
You can also sign up for a google Webmaster tools account (Google it) and tell Google where your sitemaps are located.
