You can install Word 2000 on your computer. You won't be able to upgrade to a newer version, but if you wife uses it then you should have no compatibility issues.

As for OpenOffice, it is free. I'm not sure where the $19.95 per year fee is about. Did you go to this download page http://download.openoffice.org/index.html?

Yes, it came installed...I checked my wife's disks from Gateway and she has a disk that has Word 2000 on it...Would I be wise to install this Word 2000 on my computer via that disk, in the hopes I can update the Word to a more recent version?...I checked on the Open Office and they list it as free, but when you go in to download it, they want a $19.95 per year fee via Visa/Mastercard/Paypal before they will allow you to download it...so I have not downloaded Open Office at this point...Please give me your thoughts as to what would be best to do at this point...You have been a great person to assist me with this...I will await your reply...William Wilson

Thanks for your reply...I do not have the installation disk for MS Office on my wife's computer. The program was pre-installed by the factory so she does not have it either...I will check out the other free program you mentioned...I checked on the internet and Microsoft wants $149 for their software although they offer you a free 90 day trial, but the trial software can only be used 25 times before you have to buy it or give it up. I will keep you posted. I am very grateful to you for all of your help. William Wilson

Thanks for your reply...I tried pinging my wife's computer and sent 4 packets of 32 bytes each...0 packets were received by her computer...Perhaps the best way is to copy her "word" program to my computer...and if so, how do I go about doing that? My wife has the admin status on her computer...I am under her...We have internet access through AOL on her computer, and she has admin status on that...I have an identity on her computer but not admin status there...I am the only person on my computer which is several rooms away...We have a wireless LAN...my computer is hardwired to the internet...her computer receives its signal by wireless transmission from my computer...I can go into the room where her computer is located and use ms word on her computer there, however, I would prefer to be able to use MS word from my computer several rooms away...I would be grateful for your advice on what you think is best to do...and how to go about it...Thanks so much...William Wilson

Thanks for your reply.I tried using the remote desktop way, and changed my wife's computer to allow remote access, and went back to my computer and tried again without success. On my view of the LAN, her computer is listed as enabled and my computer is listed as enabled. I used my computer IP and her computer IP, and tried it without her being on her computer and her computer logged off, and I also tried it with her computer logged on without success. Either way, on my computer, I get the message "Remote Desktop Disconnected" and "This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Type the computer name and IP address again, and then try connecting. If the problem continues, contact the owner of the remote computer or your network administrator"...Where do I go from here? Thanks...William Wilson

I have a technical question for you. I have a home LAN of 2 computers with roadrunner and both computers running Windows XP. My wife has Microsoft Office on her computer. I do not have that program on mine. How can I access her program from my computer? I have already set up the LAN so I can use her printer from my computer. Your help and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! William Wilson
