How many backlinks are more than a few?
I read so much about the importance of 'creating' many (or tons of) backlinks. However, I was unsuccessful so far to find a more precise definition of what 'many' is in this case? In particular my question refers to new blogs (or new) websites).
So, with how many backlinks would you start going 'live'?

I don't think there is any certain number of back links it's more so about the relevancy of the back links.
Meaning... How closely related the link is to your site and how valuable this page is in terms of search engines.
Keep writing good content and offering good things people like and quality back links will follow

By "going live", do you mean good SE rankings? The umbrella answer to the question is as many as you can - links are at the core of your position in SERPs, as well as your PR (note: not important as a toolbar value).

Thank you for your answers. My future main blog is still on a local XAMPP server. I think I will take this blog online only when I do have some significant content (blog posts plus some static pages which I consider as sort of my 'flagship content'). However, I do have a 'test' blog which is already online for learning purposes (it is in a similar niche). Funnily enough this blog ranks quite high for certain keyword phrases (and I do get a - tiny - number of clicks ). Of course this blog will be my first source for a backlink (beside social bookmarking). I also wrote some squidoo lenses and hubpages from which I will backlink when I am ready to go online with my main blog.
So I think I can get about 5-10 backlinks within the first 24h (and continuously adding more as time goes by). Do you think that this is a reliable strategy and a 'good' start?

Counting BL is not wise... found some site with less than 5 BL in the top but some with 100 in the last... important is quality.. get little quality link instead of getting bulk on link from many sources....Also by the ranbking can not say the link quality.. Bl is one fo the main factor but for ranking And in SERP consider many factors like content, age, on page optmization etc.. also luck hahaha.....

Yes, I did realise while analysing SERPs (I now have a firefox SEO tool installed) that the PR of the sites vary to a great degree ... even on page 1 of the search results.
Addon-Question: Is my assumption correct, that a backlink from e.g. hubpages is counted only once meaning there is no extra gain (other than traffic) from having 2 or 3 or more hubs backlinking to your blog/website ?

In linkbuilding, it is not quantity that matters. Quality and relevancy are even important. You can build as much links as you can, just make sure they are relevant and come from sites with good reputation. Avoid linking to bad neighborhood.

Hey there,
Can I suggest you take a look at this SEOmoz video: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/whiteboar...-awesome-links
It basically explains what search engines really want to see from links.

No one knows the exact formula that Google uses, but the basic conservative rule is to develop links at a steady pace in a natural manner. Avoid software that can get a ton of backlinks, super quick!
What is more important in a link is how related a link is...

Thanks all of you for your response. So far I am bookmarking on some social bookmarking sites, writing squidoos and hubs (more of them lately). In addition I am considering writing some ezines. Since I am not extremely fast at writing, I guess, that my pace of link development is not in danger to become to unnatural .

It is really a question that no one ca answer for u.
You have to make a full judgement of your site's performance.
The quantity of the backlinks is not a question u should pay too much attentionm the quality does.
When your site has doing better, then try to gradually get more backlinks.
