Loosing Google backlinks
I worked hard getting incoming backlinks to my site and I'm happy with my progress. Though, slowly, but I'm getting results.
Suddenly, when I checked Google, I've lost 70% of my backlinks. I don't know why or what happened.

If you delated a page from your site I think that they are no longer counted because that url does not exist any more.

Backlinks
Google is not always consistent when it displays backlinks, you may want to check your backlinks using alternative tools here is a list of backlink checkers: http://www.webmaster-elements.com/we...king-tools.htm
Another possibility is that the links were gained too quickly or that all the anchor text was the same, creating a flag in Google's system, but that is just pure speculation. How has your organic ranking been influenced?

Always work and concentrate according Google result.. third party tools gives all the BL, but Google is given the indexed result. Me never consider third party tool and m getting rank and traffic is based on Google webmaster tools result. Keep working based on it is good for SEO for G
Better keep doing BL process regular basis for maintaining the BL

Hi,
Google shows only those backlinks which seems important in eyes of Google. However, it doesn't mean that google doesn't count rest of the links as backlinks. You can use Google Webmaster Tools to check out total number of links which are pointing to your website.

blown away at all the back link info
Hi My boyfriend and I have so needed to find out more about backlinks and are truly amazed at all the info here. It's incredibly helpful indeed.
What we would also like to know though is just how important is it? How much time does one need to spend on blogging and posting in forums, and checking how back links are doing, and refreshing them etc etc, which just keeps one away from actual work? Is it an immense amount of time for back links to be very effective, or not?

You cannot lose backlinks only if you delete a page or if google consider that page to be spam.
Just check your site in the above backlink checkers provided in the above replies

If you are new to blogging, you should spend more time on posting on forums and commenting on other people blog than writing contents on your blog. Only if your contents are superb, then you should spend more time writing on your blog than posting in forums. Don't worry about checking for backlink.
This forum is not as big as the digitalpoint forum
I hope this helps

Forum posts back links can be available within a couple days.
Brownie Point Tip
I have been using tools for a very long time. I spent a lot of time listening and following them. To find your true back links in Google you need to use webmaster tools and view them.
When you use the LINK: in the search box, Google intentionally only gives a sampling of your actual links. It is actually based upon your sites information being for you, not for others and certainly not competition.
Yahoo web tools pretty much lets you look at everyone if you want to see what your key competitors are doing.

Does this apply only if you are blogging? Do you have the same advice for someone with static pages as well (ie a website with a blog)?

It depends on site popularity and how often a site is updated. A forum post can be indexed by Google in a matter of minutes.
