Default why do some conetnt sites die?

Every now and then i stumble upon content sites which have or are going down in alexa rankings which also suggest they probably went down in google rankings as well.

For example, this site Onajax.net which i stumbled upon has about 70 content pages but is 1 million in alexa rankings. The whois record shows the site was established in 2006.

Alexa ranking shows its going down in ranking. Why does this happen? The site has google PR of 3 and has about 100 or so backlink/inbound links (http://www.webuildpages.com/neat-o/), yet is going down in ranking.

I thought that once the site established, it maintains it web presence, therefore, goes on auto pilot.

I have seen sites whose content is nothing extraordinary, yet they dominate google index for every related keyword. One such example is tizag.com

So why is that some content sites (on the same subject with same number of pages/topics) gets on google page 1 and seem to stick there and some just die out?

In my opinion, its all about the visitors. Maybe visitors donot stay on the dying sites for a very long time, indicating the search engines of such a website. On the other hand, there might be more visitors on the flourishing site, telling the search engine about such a site and threfore the site has a high ranking.

that's my opinion.

Take that data with a pinch of salt. Alexa is a flawed system. They show one of my sites as dying breed but my stat programs and revenue tell me different.

So true, Gavin... plus fewer and fewer people have the Alexa bars installed on their PC's so that skews the data drastically. My Alexa rank has gone down from 35,000 to 46,000 but my daily visits are up by about 400 uniques per day.

Matt Cutts has gone onto mentioning it a few times, if anyone is interested.

I just wish specific affiliate programs would stop using it a measuring tool against our sites.

Seriously? Have you been rejected from a program because of a low Alexa ranking? That bites.

Its usually the only reason why I can think I've been rejected. Its not as if my sites are MFA's or purely made for profit. I've even seen directory owners make it a rule that you need an alexa rank to get a link also.

Alexa really should give us code to place on our sites so they can make better estimates. They would then have the ability to grow even bigger in what they already are. I would have a lot more respect for their rankings if they did.

Alexa annoys me and I stopped using it a long time ago. I prefer page strength as it's a much better tool.

The search engine landscape is constantly changing.

Sites move up and down all the time unless you have an authority site then it will stay constant.

Alexa is just for entertainment purposes. It is not accurate because not everybody has got the tool installed on their pc's. They just recently launched an Alexa toolbar for FireFox.

You alexa ranking will also not stay constant. It will go up and soen.

Google also plays favorites to older sites that have been around a while. I read if your site is 3+ years old and you continue to update it and get low bounce rates then you have a good chance of sticking around in the SERPS.
