Well, I have had my niche site hit hard by the latest penguin update- gone from 225 pageviews p/d to...6. Having done a backlink check I have found backlinks which have arrived in the last couple of weeks from 404 pages & spam iphone websites. I've gone through the Google disavow process, but it doesn't look good and just as I was beginning to get somewhere in terms of adsense earnings.
I've not had a manual message through webmaster tools to indicate that my backlinks were possibly spammy, but the traffic drop speaks for itself. Anyone got any advice on what to do next?
Lisa Irby- I think I recall seeing a post on your blog about malicious backlinking but I can't seem to find it?
Sorry to hear that zen life,
I'm not sure I ever wrote anything about malicious backlinking -- at least that's not what I called it. So I'm not sure what post you mean.
Penguin penalties do not trigger GWT notifications because it is an algorithm update. Manual penalties are the only ones that trigger those notifications.
The backlinks you are referring to may be scraper sites -- meaning someone is automatically lifting your content and reposting. I also get a TON of these strange errors in my GWT account. I used to worry about them but there's nothing I can really do and they come in by the loads.
Since you've already gone through the disavow process, you just have to wait it out. If those links were the cause, your site may return after the next Penguin update. The tough part is you just don't know when that will be.
Did you do any kind of manual link building before the update?
Hi Lisa- no- I was getting myself confused! I was actually referring to a post that you wrote about people lifting your content- I think my brain has frazzled!

I think you overdid it.
There are lots of factors that you need to look at. For your link building campaign, have you used too much of exact match keywords? Or at least included keywords to your anchor texts? Tons of websites got slapped by Penguin because of overdoing anchor text usage.
You might also want to look at the numbers of domains pointing to your site. Lots of links from a domain looks suspicious.
Relevancy, this is a very important matter. Where those links come from? are they relevant to your niche?
Do you mean the article on Authorship where you tag your content to your name? I honestly can't recall which post.
