Is it a bad idea to use those article distribution services?

as much as possible do it manually. At lease, you have total control on where you will submit your article.

I've read that it's okay and I've read it's not okay. I would think it's not a good idea to have the same article on hundreds of sites.

I think it fine. It can give free backlinks to your site.

I actually use a reputable distribution service and find that I get a lot of backlinks from it. Just do your due diligence and ensure you are using a service that is reputable and can prove to you where your article is being submitted to. I write on average 5 articles a week and distribute them with the use of a distribution service.

if you submit unique articles to each and every article directory, it gives better results.
